My current exhibition showcases a collection of screenprints and paintings of both Edinburgh cityscapes and landscapes. It explores a range of mark making across a variety of mediums such as oil on board, monoprint, acrylic on canvas, acrylic on paper, screenprints and watercolour/mixed media. The two broad subject matters of City and Country offer me a very different approach and sensitivity in my work which requires a variety of mediums to respond accordingly. The essence however is in the line and the mark making. It’s the combination of marks in the one image that interests me the most and for me these two subjects offer me a very different ways of expressing them.
The exhibition runs from the 3-27 September (it was extended a further week). The exhibition is held at Leith Makers, an exciting, new studio, shop and exhibition space on Leith Walk. I was invited to exhibit by Calum, the owner of Leith Makers and when I saw the space I couldn’t resist. The building it’s has undergone a major transformation, turning a rundown bakery into a contemporary space full of all it’s original features including the original iron railway running across the ceiling.
I hosted a watercolour and wine event in the space on the evening of Saturday 12th September which was a huge success. I managed to squeeze in 16 people all up. I started with a demonstration on how to do a watercolour and then handed everyone a glass of wine or sparkling water and we sat and painted a cityscape or a landscape for 2 hours while enjoying some classical tunes. The cosy space added such a calm vibe throughout the evening.
